My name is Johanna, I am Dutch and I am living on the Costa Blanca for many years.
Before that, my life played out in the Netherlands where I worked in healthcare in various disciplines. For instance, I was a psychiatric and general nurse and spent a lot of time caring for the elderly. The last 12 years in the Netherlands, as an outpatient, social psychiatric nurse, I focused mainly on geriatric psychiatry, also working with elderly people with dementia.
Even here in Spain, I continued to work in care. Now I am committed to professional informal care.
In my work, but also in my immediate environment, I notice that many elderly people are deprived of informal care. However, they do need this care as the children often do not live here and/or the partner has fallen away.
What I do, however small the contribution sometimes is, I like to do and enjoy doing. I take on those tasks that a son, daughter or grandchild could otherwise perform. Think of accompanying to the doctor or the optician. Even simply keeping company is one of the possibilities. Just having a cup of coffee or a drink together, having a good conversation or playing a game. Seemingly small gestures, but resulting in fine outcomes and great satisfaction. Other possibilities include helping organise the household or assisting with administration.
And I can also be there for informal carers. If you are a carer yourself and would like to be relieved for a few hours, I will be happy to take over that task from you temporarily.
A practical example:
Harry and Margret wanted to spend the winter in Benidorm again. In previous years, they used to do this regularly but after Harry was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Margret no longer dared. Now she took the step to spend a month in Benidorm. Beforehand, she
contacted me to discuss how I could help. After a (free) introductory talk in which both got a positive image of me, we agreed on the following:
I would accompany Harry for an afternoon twice a week so Margret could do something for herself.
The month went fine. Harry quickly felt at ease with me, we regularly played games or went out, touring by car, taking a walk or having lunch together. Margret was also content and so their month in Benidorm went satisfactorily for both of them.
My interests are diverse. I like to read, can enjoy a good series on Netflix and love hiking and nature. I love going out with my dog Luna. I also enjoy the Spanish sun, on a terrace or on the beach.
